Crayon Cupcakes

Wow! How fast did this summer fly by? I know we tend to say that for every  year, but this one felt fast-paced.

For this year’s end-of-the-summer dessert, I decided to whip up these adorable Crayon Cupcakes. They make the sweetest teacher gifts. All you have to do is wrap each one with cellophane, tie a little crayon around it and you’ve got the most original gift, ever!

I absolutely adore working with fondant. These crayons are so easy to shape and will have you looking like a cupcake pro!

Crayon Cupcakes

Servings 24 Cupcakes

  • Vanilla cake box mix + ingredients to make it
  • 2 sticks butter softened
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • Blue gel frosting
  • Green gel frosting
  • 4 oz. blue fondant
  • 4 oz. green fondant
  • Black gel frosting


  1. Prepare your cupcakes according to box’s directions. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
  2. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk on high. These ingredients will make your buttercream. Continue mixing on high until buttercream forms stiff peaks.
  3. Using a piping bag, frost each of your cupcakes.
  4. Take 12 of your cupcakes and draw some squiggles with your blue gel frosting. Do the same with your other 12 cupcakes with your green gel frosting.
  5. To form the fondant crayons: roll out spheres that are about 1.5 inches in diameter. Roll each one out into a cylindrical form. Pinch one end to create the “tip” of the crayon.
  6. Using a toothpick and your black gel frosting, draw two thin black lines on each crayon.
  7. Place one fondant crayon on each cupcake (with its respective squiggle color, of course!). Enjoy!
