This Lion King Cake is simple and easy to make. Plus, it's tastes outta this world good!

Ingredients

Yellow Cake Ingredients

  • 5 C flour 
  • 2 2/3 C sugar
  • 1 1/2 (3 sticks) unsalted sweet cream butter, softened 
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 C whole milk
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • black gel food coloring 
  • Brown gel food coloring 

Vanilla butter cream frosting ingredients

  • 2 C (4 sticks) unsalted sweet cream butter, softened 
  • 4-5 C powdered sugar 
  • 4-6 tbsp heavy whipping cream 
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 
  • red and orange gel food coloring 

Decorating ingredients

  • Red wilton color mist 
  • Orange wilton color mist
  • Yellow wilton color mist
  • 1 tube of black cake icing 

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray three 9-inch round cake pans with pam baking spray

  2. Using a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined

  3. Using a standing mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy

  4. Gradually beat in the eggs, one at a time until combined

  5. Beat in the vanilla until combined

  6. Alternating between the flour and milk, gradually beat in both ingredients until combined

  7. Scoop out 1 C of batter and put it into one of the mixing bowls

  8. Repeat step with second mixing bowl

  9. In one bowl, mix in a few drops of black gel food coloring until combined

  10. In the second bowl, mix in a few drops of brown gel food coloring until combined

  11. Scoop the black cake batter into one of the squeeze bottles and scoop the brown cake batter into the other

Directions to build the cheetah print cake

  1. Scoop about 2 – 3 C of cake batter into the cake pans,

  2. Using the black cake batter, begin to pipe and outline of a half to 3 quarter circles. These are the cheetah's spots

  3. Using the brown cake batter, pipe out the same outline of the circles but only on the inside of the black circles. Like in the in-process images

  4. Once the spots are made, scoop 1 C of cake batter over the spots to cover them

  5. Repeat steps with remaining cake pans

  6. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean

  7. Once cakes are baked, allow to cool completely.

Vanilla buttercream frosting

  1. Using a standing mixer, beat all ingredients together until combined, smooth and stiff peaks form

  2. Scoop 1/2 C of frosting into two bowls

  3. In one bowl, mix in red gel food coloring until combined

  4. In the second bowl, min in the orange gel food coloring until combined

  5. Scoop the red frosting onto one side of the piping bag

  6. Scoop the orange frosting onto the other side

  7. Twist the piping bag and push the frosting down towards the tip. Set aside

Building the cake

  1. Using the cake slicer, slice off the domes to make even layers

  2. Place one cake layer onto the cake board.

  3. Scoop 1 C of frosting onto the top of the first layer

  4. Smooth evenly

  5. Place the second cake layer on top of the first layer of frosting

  6. Scoop 1 C of frosting onto the second cake layer

  7. Repeat steps with remaining cake layer

  8. Once the layers are put together begin frosting the entire cake

  9. Place into the fridge for 1 hour

Decorating the cake

  1. Using the yellow color mist, spay the bottom of the cake, about 1 layer in size

  2. Using the orange color mist, spray the middle of the cake. Making sure that the orange touches the yellow color on the frosting

  3. Using the red color mist, spray the top sides and the top of the cake in red

  4. You are trying to achieve a sunset look

  5. Squeeze the black cake icing into the piping bag

  6. Begin to pipe out safari animals and tree of life along the cake

  7. Using the red and orange frosting, pipe dollops all around the top edge

  8. Place back into the fridge for another hour before enjoying.
