Once you make the decision to lose weight, you’ll need to begin a good exercise routine. Unfortunately, that’s where many people suffering from obesity hit their first major roadblock. Being obese often means having limited mobility and very little energy. Walking across the room may leave you short of breath and you may have to sit down to rest often throughout the day. When you’re suffering from obesity, it’s easy to feel defeated before you even get started but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Here’s how to begin an exercise routine when you’re obese:
- Get in the right mindset. Think about what you can do instead of what you can’t. Look for an exercise plan that you can and will follow such as walking, water aerobics or dancing.
- Start out slow and be patient. It took time to gain the weight and it will take time to lose it. Getting in a hurry to drop weight fast can create even more problems that include injuring yourself or getting burned out before you begin to see results.
- Don’t listen to negativity. There will always be someone telling you that exercising is too hard, you’ll never stick with it or that you have to exercise vigorously every day to see results. You can see results if you stick with it and surrounding yourself with positivity and encouraging words instead of negativity will help.
- Join an exercise class designed for people who need to lose a lot of weight. If you know you have a hard time getting started or staying committed, join an exercise class that addresses your specific needs. It also gives you a chance to socialize with others dealing with similar problems.
These tips will help you get off to a good start. As you begin to lose weight and get in shape, your mobility and energy levels will increase. Exercising will get easier allowing you to add new exercises and strength training to your routine for even better results.
